October Monthly Awareness Polish Box: Breast Cancer Awareness

October Monthly Awareness Polish Box: Breast Cancer Awareness
***Discount Samples***

Good Morning and happy Monday! This week we are starting things off with a little awareness. As you know October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and that’s when the whole world goes PINK in an effort to bring aware awareness and change to a terrible disease that one in eight, yes 1:8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

So think about if you gathered yourself and 7 other females in your life. This stat of 1:8 means that one of you will be diagnosed with breast cancer. I don’t know about you, but that crazy to me.

Here are a few more stats that just blow my mind!

  • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women.*
  • Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women.*
  • Each year it is estimated that over 246,660 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die.*
  • Although breast cancer in men is rare, an estimated 2,600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 440 will die each year.*
  • On average, every 2 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer and 1 woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes.*
  • Over 2.8 million breast cancer survivors are alive in the United States today.*

I believe early detection is KEY!! Looks for signs:

  • A change in how the breast or nipple feels
  • A change in the breast or nipple appearance
  • Any nipple discharge—particularly clear discharge or bloody discharge

At-Home Self Breast Exams

Give yourself a breast self-exam once a month 7-10 days after menstrual period starts which is also when breasts are the least tender and lumpy.

If they are no longer menstruating, then select the same day of the month (first of the month for example) and mark it on the calendar to remind yourself when to perform this self exam.

What to look for is a change from last month’s exam to this month’s exam. It is not unusual to have lumpy or bumpy breasts. Look for any changes in breast tissue, such as changes in size, feeling a palpable lump, dimpling or puckering of the breast, inversion of the nipple, redness or scaliness of the breast skin, redness or scaliness of the nipple/areola area, or discharge of secretions from the nipple.

Note: If you discover a persistent lump in your breast or any changes, it is very important that you see a physician immediately.

This is not to scare anyone, it’s simply to bring and raise awareness.

Adeline, better known as Addie Mae, is the daughter of 2-Bit indie polish maker Kiley Akers Underhill. This sweet, sassy and spunky 7 years old loves all things unicorn, pink, her goats and playing with her brothers. However, her sweet and innocent world changed forever July 30, 2017 when a MRI revealed Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma or DIPG…a brain tumor.

Because surgery is the treatment for many other types of brain tumors, it is not possible for DIPG and even chemo is not effective due to limitations reaching a DIPG tumor. Therefore, Addie has been receiving radiation therapy for 6 of the 6.5 week treatment at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville. Addie’s family has been faced with daunting expenses during this time including medical expenses beyond insurance, travel, loss of pay, and child care for their 2 other children and Addie Mae’s her brothers, Skyler & Xander.

By now, I’m sure you have seen Addie’s beautiful face and read her story all over social media as many support groups, organizations and of course family is calling out for your support and to raise awareness.  It didn’t take long before the indie nail polish community heard of what was going on and sprung into action. Swatcher/Blogger, Courney Everton Stemple (creator of M.A.P.B) and indie polish maker Crystal Churchill of POSHlish co-created and organized the #TeamAddieMae Benefit Box uniting 10 brands together for 1 purpose….Addie Mae! This box exudes compassion, love and support for Addie Mae and her family. Makers donated time and resources to make this happen all so one little girl could have a fighting chance.

PROCEEDS WILL BE DONATED DIRECTLY TO THE FAMILY!!!!

Let’s take a look!

Hello? Summer? Where did you go? I seemed to have misplaced summer you and I want you back. One minute my kids were just getting out of school and now I’m planning a birthday party for my youngest who will be 6 on the 17th and trying to find time to go back to school shopping. Luckily, the school system pushed back the first day of school until after Labor Day so that means I have 5 short weeks to hopefully find a day to spend at the beach. Let’s face it, a summer break without a beach trip is no summer at all.

I am excited about this school year though. With the pending move, I have changed my girls school so they wouldn’t have to once we moved. So they will be meeting new friends, teachers and a new school. They are looking forward to back to school night when we’ll be able to go in and tour the school before the first day. As for my son, he starts high school!! #insertwaterworkshere! I didn’t think the day would come so soon that I would be uttering those words. But it’s true, we have a highschooler folks.

But enough about me, let’s get to the polish. There’s something special when 4 makers work together to produce an amazing collab of polishes. Indies Outside the Box (IOTB): Fan-tastic Customs includes polishes from Polish M, Lollipop Posse Lacquer, Top Shelf Lacquer and Fair Maiden and with brands like these you can bet your bottom dollar that we are in for a treat!

***Discount Samples***

Hey y’all, welcome back! Today I have swatches from the July Monthly Awareness Polish Box. July is International Group B Strep Awareness Month and if you’re like me, you have either never heard of it or maybe you have but still really don’t know or understand what is it.

Let’s take a deeper look into Group B Strep.

What is Group B Strep?

“Group B Streptococcus (GBS), or Streptococcus agalactiae, is a type of bacteria that is naturally found in the digestive and lower reproductive tracts of both men and women.  About 1 in 4 pregnant women “carry” or are “colonized” with GBS.”

“Carrying GBS does not mean that you are unclean.  Anyone can carry GBS. GBS is not considered to be a sexually transmitted disease or infection as it can occur on its own even in someone with no prior sexual experience. However, bacteria can be passed between sexual partners, including through oral contact.”

“Unfortunately, babies can be infected by GBS before birth and up to about 6 months of age due to their underdeveloped immune systems.”***

(For more information check out the referenced page at the end of the post.)

May is National Stoke Awareness Month

Is that’s time of the month again when we here at the Queendom get our edumakation on. LOL, that was a joke. But seriously, it’s the time of the month when I try to bring you a little knowledge to go with your beautiful polish fix. Next week begins National Stroke Awareness Month and did you know that strokes are the 5th cause of death and leading cause of disability in the U.S. No? Neither did I! Keep reading to find out a little more about stroke, ways to minimize your risk and understanding the warning signs.

Q: What is a stroke?

A: “Stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts (or ruptures). When that happens , part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so it and brain cells die.” In laymans terms, “a stroke is a medical emergency that happens when the blood flow to your brain is interrupted. Without blood, your brain cells start to die.”*

Q: What are the different types of stroke?

A: “There are 3 different main types of strokes, Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), Ischemic, and Hemorrhagic. It’s estimated that 87 percent of strokes are ischemic.”*

Q: What can I do to prevent a stroke?

A: Here are a few ways to reduce your risk of stroke. 1) prevent or control high blood pressure, 2) eat healthy, 3) get quality sleep, 4) be physically active, 5) maintain a healthy body weight, 6) quit smoking (if you’re a smoker), 7) control blood sugar and 8) manage cholesterol*

Know the Signs:

F.A.S.T.*

F – Face drooping
